Summer term 2026

Welcome Year 6!

Mr Davies, Mrs Alley and Mrs Whittaker are excited to welcome you to Year 6. This year has some exciting topics and experiences in store, and we are looking forward to exploring them together. We aim to make your final year at St Mary's a memorable one and hope you do too.

Our Christian Values

During the Summer term, our Christian values are honesty and determination.

Love of reading

In Year 6, we love to read and listen to stories which challenge the way we think or tackle difficult life events. We feel that this helps us build our empathy and resillience for the wider world. With this in mind, we will continue reading Tyger by SF Said. A book which views the world from the eyes of a different culture, but with a magical and supernatural element.

Tyger: British Book Awards Children’s Fiction Book of the Year 2023

English

In the first half term we will use the book 'Manfish' byJennifer Berne and during the second half term we will use 'Sky Chasers' by Emma Carroll. Both books will look to further our understanding of the expectations of a Year 6 writer. Our final pieces will be a recount and a narrative piece.

Manfish: The story of Jacques Cousteau  Sky Chasers

Our weekly routine will include spelling and grammar, handwriting and guided reading sessions. Daily reading at home continues to be essential, even in Year 6, and we would ask that you question your child regularly on the book they are reading to develop a deeper understanding of a range of texts, to develop new vocabulary and strengthen writing skills. Please sign at least once a week. The children's diaries will be checked on Thursdays and Fridays with a reward at the end of each half term for consistent reading.

Our Pathways to Read texts will be 'Great Adventurers' by Alastair Humphries and Sky Chasers. This will help us understand and expand our vocabulary for writing, but also allow us to develop our reading skills and awareness of the style we will be writing in.

Spelling

We will continue to use Pathways to Spell as part of our English lessons to develop spelling strategies and learn spelling rules, as well as the Y5/6 words.

Maths

As mathematicians, the children will learn through concrete experiences moving onto pictorial and abstract methods as their confidence builds. They will also be expected to use their learning to reason about maths and solve problems.

During the summer term we will focus on percentages, algebra, geometry, angles and coordinates. We will place a heavy focus on embedding known skills and facts in order to improve our arithmetic knowledge.

Science

As scientists, we aim to develop our knowledge and understanding, scientific skills and measuring and recording abilities. This term we will be understanding how light travels and enables us to see and further our work on electrcity, building on prior knowledge from previous years.

Our focus scientists are Ibn al-Haytham and .

For RE we will continue to use the Questful RE planning. This term we will explore the questions: What is the nature and character of God? Have you discovered any beliefs about God in common across different faiths? and how does having faith affect people’s lives?

We will also look how these questions can be answered in Islamic, Buddhist and Hindu faiths.
