Year 6 Autumn 2

A Busy Term of Learning and Growth

What a busy term it has been! The children have thoroughly enjoyed our Literacy focus on the text Can We Save the Tiger?

and have developed their writing skills by creating their own independent versions of the booklet, based on different amazing animals. This hybrid text included a mix of information, explanation, and persuasive writing. We focused on enhancing meaning by selecting appropriate grammar, vocabulary and using expanded noun phrases to convey complicated information concisely. The children also explored the use of modal verbs, adverbs, and punctuation techniques like brackets, dashes, and commas to indicate parenthesis. Our final task was to create a polished piece of writing, showcasing their creativity and skill. They learnt about animals and also presented their facts in a range of styles.

Geography Focus: Global Trade

In Geography, we focused on global trade and the interconnectedness of countries. The children have been learning to locate and identify countries of trade importance, and how transportation affects global supply chains. They’ve used a variety of resources to describe trade and commerce, particularly looking at the patterns of import and export data, and understanding cause and effect within different mass-produced products. Our study of global trade in clothing helped the children see how regions around the world are interdependent, and how these links shape our daily lives. At the end of the topic we learnt about ethical trade and discussed how we can facilitate this.

In art, our focus this term was ‘The Art of Anatomy’.

The children responded well to learning about great artists from Ancient Greece and compared their work to later Renaissance artists. They were confident in discussing the differences in anatomical artwork and developed their own skills in sketching and drawing human bodies and body parts in proportion. Some of our focus was on the ball-and-socket technique to accurately draw the human body.

Religious Education: Advent

We have learnt about the Christian observance of Advent, reflecting on how Christians prepare for Christmas. The two most common artefacts linked to the seasons of Advent are the Advent wreath and the Advent calendar. We learnt about the traditional themes associated with Advent and linked to the wreath, hope, peace, joy, love or The Prophets, John the Baptist, Mary and God’s people. As each candle of the Advent wreath is lit one of the themes is explored.

Some of our work linked to Mary, mother of Jesus, discussing what sort of person she was? What did she look like? The children were encouraged to use their imagination.

The class engaged in thoughtful discussions about the significance of this time of year and what it means to different faith communities.

Science Focus: Variation and Classification

In Science, we learned about important scientists who have shaped our understanding of vaccination, such as Louis Pasteur. The children investigated the classification of living things, exploring how plants, animals, and microorganisms are grouped based on observable characteristics. They also discussed the reasons for classifying living things and the importance of these categories in science.

Christmas Celebrations

As the term came to a close, we celebrated the festive season with a school disco, a Christingle service at church, and a poetic version of the nativity story performed for our families. These events were a wonderful way to bring the school community together and reflect on the meaning of Christmas.

We wish you all a safe, happy, and joyous Christmas, and look forward to the exciting learning ahead in the new term.
