Summer 2 will focus on the value of determination.

Love of reading
Our class novel for this half-term is 'To be announced'
English
In the first Summer term we will use 'Escape from Pompeii' by Christina Balit’ to develop our writing skills using historical narrative from the point of view of one of the characters. Children will develop skills in using present and past tenses correctly, including the progressive form and the present perfect form. They will be encouraged to group ideas into paragraphs and use inverted commas to punctuate direct speech. Children will be expected to use varied and rich vocabulary to improve their work.
Our weekly routine will include spelling and grammar, handwriting and guided reading sessions. Daily reading at home continues to be essential, and we would ask that you question your child regularly on the book they are reading to develop a deeper understanding of a range of texts, to develop new vocabulary and strengthen writing skills.
Our Pathways to Read text will be ' Illustrated Atlas of Britain and Ireland’ by Struan Reid and Meghan Cullis. The text will teach children atlas skills and knowledge of locations around the UK and Ireland whilst continuing to develop their skills in retrieval, recording information and using dictionaries.
Spelling
We will continue to use Pathways to Spell as part of our English lessons to develop spelling strategies and learn spelling rules, as well as the Y3/4 words.
Maths
As mathematicians, the children will learn through concrete experiences moving onto pictorial and abstract methods as their confidence builds. They will also be expected to use their learning to reason about maths and solve problems.
During the spring term we will focus on Statistics, Geometry and measurement of time.
Science
As scientists, we aim to develop our knowledge and understanding, scientific skills and measuring and recording abilities. This half term we will be investigating and understanding plants and their life cycle. Children will begin to identify and describe the functions of different parts of the plant and what they need to live. Children will also investigate how water is transported within plants.
History
In History this half-term, we will learn about ‘The Romans’ and how life changed during this period. Children will be able to use dates and historical terms to describe events whilst building an overview of world history and how social and cultural changes have occurred over time. Children will place events on a timeline.
RE
For RE we will continue to use the Questful RE planning. This half term we will be focusing on rules for living. Which rules shall we follow? In this unit, the need for rules to live by is discussed and linked to the events of the Fall (Genesis 3), the rescue of the PEOPLE OF GOD followed by the gift of the 10 commandments (Exodus 19 and 20) and the impact of Jesus’ new command in the GOSPEL to love one another.
The aim of this unit is to: give pupils an opportunity to consider the value and purpose of rules, examine Christian rules for living and the source of these rules, encourage pupils to reflect upon their own lifestyle and the influences upon it and investigate the rules followed by two/three world faiths and the ways in which these rules influence behaviour and decisions.
PE
Pupils should continue to apply and develop a broader range of skills, learning how to use them in different ways and to link them to make actions and sequences of movement. They should enjoy communicating, collaborating and competing with each other. They should develop an understanding of how to improve in different physical activities and sports and learn how to evaluate and recognise their own success.
Pupils should be taught to: use running (long & short distance), jumping and throwing in isolation and in combination as well as play competitive games, modified where appropriate. Pupils will continue to develop technique across all athletics disciplines in an attempt to achieve personal best scores/ times/ distances.
Art and DT
As artists, children will discover 'texture and layer painting techniques' taking inspiration from the work of 'Renoir.' Children will study Renoir’s work and his use of perspective – foreground and background. They will learn how to use a range of brushing techniques and how to mix colours effectively, experimenting by creating mood with colour.
P.S.H.E.
In PHSE, we will follow the Heart smart scheme. This will start with us reminding ourselves that 'fake is a mistake’ Children will be reminded how it is important to be honest and true to themselves.
We will also cover a range of topics including friendships, relationships, wellbeing & first aid to ensure children are being given the tools to help them be successful in their lives, whilst keeping themselves and others healthy and safe.
Music
As musicians, we will be using Charanga to explore 'Enjoying Improvisation'.
Exploring the structure of songs is interesting and important. There are patterns in songs that you will recognise. Listening, singing, playing and improvising are some of them. Introduction, verse, and chorus are some more. You will improvise over a section of the song. Can you work out where you will improvise in the songs in this unit? Can you identify sections of the music that change or repeat?
MFL
As linguists, we will learn how to introduce ourselves both verbally and written. We will then go on to discover the names of countries and capital cities in the French language.
Computing
Children will discover sequences in music, learn more about privacy and security online before going on to add events and actions in a programme called ‘Scratch.’
Homework
Homework will be sent out on Friday to be returned on or before the following Wednesday. We expect each piece to take about 20 minutes. Please come and see us if there are any difficulties or write a note on the piece of work. It is important to complete each piece as they will either build on taught skills or pre teach skills ready for the following week.
