Love of reading
Our class novel for this half-term is 'To be announced'
English
In the first Spring term we will use 'Stone Age Boy' by Satoshi Kitamura’ to develop our writing skills using non-chronological reports. We will work on the use of inverted commas for dialogue, present perfect form and first/third person. Children will be expected to use varied and rich vocabulary to improve their work.
Our weekly routine will include spelling and grammar, handwriting and guided reading sessions. Daily reading at home continues to be essential, and we would ask that you question your child regularly on the book they are reading to develop a deeper understanding of a range of texts, to develop new vocabulary and strengthen writing skills.
Our Pathways to Read text will be ' Iron Man’ by Ted Hughes.
Spelling
We will continue to use Pathways to Spell as part of our English lessons to develop spelling strategies and learn spelling rules, as well as the Y3/4 words.
Maths
As mathematicians, the children will learn through concrete experiences moving onto pictorial and abstract methods as their confidence builds. They will also be expected to use their learning to reason about maths and solve problems.
During the spring term we will focus on Fractions, Measurement & Geometry.
Science
As scientists, we aim to develop our knowledge and understanding, scientific skills and measuring and recording abilities. This half term we will be investigating forces and magnets. We will compare how things move on different surfaces and notice how some forces need contact between 2 objects whereas magnetic forces can work from a distance. We will observe how magnets attract and repel each other and how they behave with a range of materials. We will predict, compare and group materials on the basis of whether they are attracted by magnets, developing an understanding of the magnets 2 poles.
History
In History this half-term, we will learn about ‘Bronze & Iron Ages.' Children will investigate the past by placing events on a timeline. They will discover the main events and periods of the Age and how changes in the way people lived brought in new eras. They will investigate the way society lived, what they ate and what they used in their daily lives. We will discuss archaeological findings and how these items help us to learn about the past.
RE
For RE we will continue to use the Questful RE planning. This half term we will be focusing on Jesus. We will start by thinking about change, how we can change, what it means to change. This will lead us into how Jesus changed lives. We will answer the big questions How did Jesus change lives? When did he or does hr change lives? What happens when Jesus changes a life? We will use a number of bible stories to help us discover the answer to these big questions, including 'The calling of Levi' & 'The story of the rich young man.'
PE
Thinking aloud - Outdoor adventure. Pupils will be given the opportunity to develop fundamental movement skills, become increasingly competent and confident and access a broad range of opportunities to extend their agility, balance and coordination, individually and with others. They should be able to engage in competitive (both against self and against others) and co-operative physical activities, in a range of increasingly challenging situations. Children will be given the opportunity to develop some basic map reading skills as well as problem solve and work cooperatively during paired and team challenges. They will be encouraged to explore the outdoors (when available), maximising the space available on school grounds to establish a sense of challenge.
Art and DT
As artists, children will discover 'Art Deco' taking inspiration from the work of 'Clarice Cliff.' Children will study Clarice's work and begin to replicate with drawings. They will focus on colour and shape. Children will eventually be given the opportunity to create their very own clay pot, adding texture and other materials.
P.S.H.E.
In PHSE, we will follow the Heart smart scheme. This will start with us reminding ourselves that 'too much selfie isn't healthy’ Children will be reminded how we also care for other people, not just ourselves.
We will also cover a range of topics including friendships, relationships, wellbeing & first aid to ensure children are being given the tools to help them be successful in their lives, whilst keeping themselves and others healthy and safe.
Music
As musicians, we will be using Charanga to explore 'Composing using your imagination' Children will use their own imagination. Can they compose a melody or choose sounds that would fit with their story? To do this we will use the songs, ‘Use your imagination' & 'You're a shining star.'
MFL
As linguists, we will learn how to read, write and say numbers in French. We will discover Paris and their culture whilst developing our reading, writing and ability to speak confidently in French.
Computing
Children will discover desktop publishing and databases and why they are used. |They will also learn more about managing online information.
Homework
Homework will be sent out on Friday to be returned on or before the following Wednesday. We expect each piece to take about 20 minutes. Please come and see us if there are any difficulties or write a note on the piece of work. It is important to complete each piece as they will either build on taught skills or pre teach skills ready for the following week.
