Welcome to Year 3
Our staff
Miss Elwell is our class teacher and Mrs Ramanouski, Miss Roberts, Miss Webster and Miss Parkinson will be supporting our learning.
The following information tells you a little more about the coming term in Year 3 and your child's learning. However, if you have any queries or questions please don't hesitate to contact us.

General information
- Please tie up long hair.
- Please have a bottle of water at school every day. This can be refilled as necessary.
- Please bring a small school bag, reading book and homework record every day (if relevant to your child).
- Please return your homework on or before Wednesday for marking. Homework will be sent out on a Friday.
- All school uniform needs to be named but particularly jumpers and cardigans.
- A full PE kit should be in school at all times.
PE is timetabled for Thursday and Friday during Autumn 1. This will be outside whenever possible so please account for this when sending in your child's PE kit.
Autumn Half Term 2 2024
Welcome Year 3!
We are excited to welcome you to your new classroom and learning. This year has some exciting topics and experiences in store, and we are looking forward to exploring them together. We aim to make your Year 3 journey at St Mary's a memorable one and hope you do too.

Love of reading
Our class novel for this half-term is 'The Twits' by Roald Dahl.
English
In the second half of Autumn term we will use 'Winter's Child' by Angela Mcallister & Grahame Baker-Smith’ to develop our writing skills and write a range of letters, diary entries and eventually or our own fantasy story.
Our weekly routine will include spelling and grammar, handwriting and guided reading sessions. Daily reading at home continues to be essential, and we would ask that you question your child regularly on the book they are reading to develop a deeper understanding of a range of texts, to develop new vocabulary and strengthen writing skills.
Our Pathways to Read text will be ' Ice Palace’ by Robert Swindles.
Spelling
We will continue to use Pathways to Spell as part of our English lessons to develop spelling strategies and learn spelling rules, as well as the Y3/4 words.
Maths
As mathematicians, the children will learn through concrete experiences moving onto pictorial and abstract methods as their confidence builds. They will also be expected to use their learning to reason about maths and solve problems.
During the autumn term we will focus on Place Value and the four operations, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and fractions.
Science
As scientists, we aim to develop our knowledge and understanding, scientific skills and measuring and recording abilities. This half term we will be investigating rocks & soils. We will develop our understanding of different types of rocks,, their properties and uses. This will extend our knowledge from Key Stage 1 as we classify and sort rocks & soils using a range of criteria.
History
In Geography this half-term, we will learn about ‘The Stone Age.' Childreln will investigate the past by placing events on a timeline. They will discover the main events and periods of the Stone Age and how changes in the way people lived brought in new eras. They will investigate the way society lived, what they ate and how they huntered and gathered foods, when farming became widespread across the UK and the tools that they used.
RE
For RE we will continue to use the Questful RE planning. This half term we will be continuing to discover what it means to be 'Called by God'. We will then move onto the Christmas topic, exploring the birth of Jesus Christ and how the presence of Jesus affects people's lives.
Courageous Advocacy
As we continue to live our lives and act out the teachings of Jesus, we will look to be courageous advocates and challenge big questions around war. We look to encourage relevant people to pursue peace across the globe.
PE
Our PE will concentrate on Gymnastics, using apparatus and bodies to create a range of movements, including a range of jumps. Children will also be given the opportunity to partake in 'Bollywood dancing,' Children will learn how to perform Indian Classical dance mudras as well as key elements of Bollywood. They will explore Indiann culture through a range of yoga cool down poses. Children will have the opportunity to develop technique, choreography, perform their own dances and appreciate the work of others.
Art and DT
As Design Technologogists, this half term, children will develop skills in manufacturing products, looking at a range of joints to join materials together. All skills developed will lead to our final product, an Iron Age House. Children will think about the use of products, design features and how to continually evaluate their work in order to make improvements to their designs.
PHSE
In PHSE, we will follow the Heartsmart scheme. This will start with us reminding ourselves about the importance of keeping our emotional and mental heart healthy.
Music
As musicians, we will be using Charanga to explore 'Playing in a band.' Children will think about harmonies, singing and playing musical instruments togeth to create beautiful sounds. To do this we will use the songs, ‘Love what we do’ and ‘When the saints go marchin' in.'
MFL
As linguists, we will learn how to read, write and say the hello and goodbye. We will learn how to ask how others are and respond to the same. Children will also learn how to count to 10 and respond to questions about their age whilst also being able to ask others, ‘Quel age as-tu?
Computing
For the second half term we will be focusing on connecting computers and how everything in the online word is connected.
Homework
Homework will be sent out on Friday to be returned on or before the following Wednesday. We expect each piece to take about 20 minutes. Please come and see us if there are any difficulties or write a note on the piece of work. It is important to complete each piece as they will either build on taught skills or pre teach skills ready for the following week.

Spring Term – Visit to Norton Priory – Theme: ‘The Stone Age.’
Summer Term – Visit to a local mosque – Theme: ‘Islam.’
World Museum Liverpool – Theme ‘various.’
