Autumn Half Term 2 2024
Welcome Year 1!
Miss Webster, Mrs Phillingham and Mrs Robertson are excited to welcome you to your new classroom and learning. This year has some exciting topics and experiences in store, and we are looking forward to exploring them together. We aim to make this year at St Mary's a memorable one and hope you do too.
Our Christian Values
During the Autumn term, our Christian value is Love.
“We love each other because he loved us first.” 1 John 4:19
Our roles and responsibilities
Photos coming soon!
Love of reading
Our class text for this half-term is 'The Guffalo' by Julia Donaldson.
English
In our second half term we will explore the wonderful text 'Nibbles the Book Monster' by Emma Yarlett to develop our writing skills and write our own adventure stories.
Our weekly routine will include Phonics, English, Handwriting and Guided Reading sessions. Daily reading at home continues to be essential, especially in Year 1, and we would ask that you question your child regularly on the book they are reading to develop a deeper understanding of a range of texts, to develop new vocabulary and strengthen writing skills.
Phonics
We will continue to use Little Wandle as part of our Phonics lessons to develop reading and spelling strategies.
Maths
As mathematicians, the children will learn through concrete experiences moving onto pictorial and abstract methods as their confidence builds. They will also be expected to use their learning to reason about maths and solve problems.
During the autumn term we will focus on Numbers to 10, including addition and subtraction, comparing and ordering numbers.
Science
As scientists, we aim to develop our knowledge and understanding, scientific skills and measuring and recording abilities. This half term we will be exploring the four seasons.
History
As historians, we will be exploring toys from the past and the present. Children will look at similiarities and differences between old and new toys, sequence toys in chronological order and compare toys that their grandparents used when they were younger.
RE
For RE we will continue to use the Questful RE planning. This half term we will explore My World and Jesus' World, and Christmas. We will also be visiting the local church on the 3rd December for our Christingle service.
Justice and Responsibility
As we continue to live our lives and act out the teachings of Jesus, we will act for Justice and take responsibility for being stewards of God's creation and global citizens. We aim to speak up for the protection of the oceans.
PE
Our PE will concentrate on gymnastics and floor work.
Art and DT
As artists, we will be looking at food and the work of Jason Mecier, Johannes Vermeer and Jim Victor.
We will also look at solid structures and design and make a bridge.
PHSE
In PHSE, we will follow the Heartsmart scheme. This will start with us reminding ourselves about the importance of keeping our emotional and mental heart healthy.
Music
As musicians, we will be using Charanga to explore different music genres and new terminology. We will be practising and rehearsing songs for a performance.
Computing
For the first half term we will be focusing on Digital Painting, Creating Pictures and Online Relationships.
Homework
Homework will be sent out on Friday and will need to be returned on or before the following Wednesday. We would also like children to read their Phonics reading book at least 3 times a week. Please come and see us if there are any difficulties or write a note on the piece of work. It is important to complete each piece as they will either build on taught skills or pre teach skills ready for the following week.
Possible trips & visitors
We are currently exploring possibilities for trips across the year.
We will be going to the local church for our Christingle Service on the 3rd December, a Christmas pantomime on the 12th December and the school disco will take place on the 28th November 3:15 - 4:15.
