Autumn 2 Overview
Last half term we focused on 'How People Celebrate'. It was a super half term and we had many things to celebrate and thought about how other people in the world celebrate too. We studied lots of different celebrations including: Bonfire Night, Diwali, Remembrance Day, Children in Need and Christmas. We developed our fine motor skills and used different materials, tools and artistic effects to create some wonderful representations of various celebrations such as; Diya lamps, bonfires, poppies and Christmas crafts/cards. We had plenty of Christmas fun and lots of us visited St Mary’s church for our Christingle service. We decorated our classroom for Christmas and even had a visit from Santa and Elsa from Frozen! We were so excited because Elsa sang for us, and we were able to ask her questions about Frozen! We all took part in a sponsored Santa dash to raise much needed funds. As part of our Courageous Advocacy and to promote our school value of compassion, we even made a wonderful festive hamper, and all the things were donated by our amazing parents. We gifted the hamper to the lovely residents at St Luke’s care home.
To enhance our gross motor skills, we have been focusing on control, movement and spatial awareness in our PE sessions. We developed our knowledge of the Christmas story through music, dance and drama. Our Nativity was a fantastic success and we remembered and performed lots of brand new songs. We also showed off our dance skills at our school Christmas disco.
In maths we began counting to 5 then 10 and beyond and recognising numerals through rhymes, songs and games. We focused on the composition, representation and subitising of numbers to 5 and began to write numerals. We also compared shapes and sizes.
In literacy we focused on pencil control, letter formation and writing our name and simple CVC words.
In phonics we made super progress, we completed all of Phase 2 and the children are starting to read books. To end the term, we had a fun filled assembly with lots of singing and dancing. It was a lovely time to spread Christmas cheer.
Wow what a busy half term! Let’s hope that next half term is just as successful.
We wish you all a fantastic Christmas and a happy and healthy new year.
